Effect of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae autolysate as an elicitor on the total bioactive metabolites content and antibacterial activity of Annona cherimola leaf extracts

Abstract

It has been reported that Annona species have potential biological activity that could be modified by the stimulation of certain elicitors. For this reason, the effect of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae autolysate as a potential electrolite, its effect on the production of bioactive metabolites of Annona cherimola, and its antibacterial activity were evaluated. Five autolysate treatments were applied. Spraying four times per week in treatments with five individuals per treatment of A. cherimola. Leaves were collected to obtain ethanolic extracts, from which the following were quantified: phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, total terpenes, and salicylic acid. The antibacterial activity was evaluated on Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Salmonella typhi, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Bacterial sensitivity tests were performed using Mueller-Hinton agar. Five concentrations of the extracts were tested, and the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined. It was observed that yeast autolysis modified the production of bioactive metabolites in Annona cherimola, increasing the concentration of phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, total terpenes, and salicylic acid. Finally, the application of the elicitor generated significant differences between the antibacterial activity of the extracts; some bacterial strains were sensitive.
